A Town Steeped in History and Academia

Lampeter is home to the Lampeter campus of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, one of the oldest degree-awarding institutions in England and Wales after Oxford and Cambridge. The university’s beautiful grounds, with its historic quadrangle and chapel, are a lovely spot for a stroll. The town’s museum, located in the old university gatehouse, provides a fascinating glimpse into Lampeter’s past, from its academic roots to its role as a drovers’ town.

A Shopper's Delight

Lampeter is a haven for independent shops and unique finds. You’ll discover a wonderful array of boutiques and stores specialising in everything from books and art to clothing and homeware. For those with a love for textiles, the Welsh Quilt Centre is a must-see. Located in the town’s historic Town Hall, it showcases a magnificent collection of traditional and contemporary quilts and blankets, and even has an attached shop. If you’re feeling inspired, Calico Kate, a well-known haberdashery, is just next door.

A Feast for Foodies

Lampeter is a town that truly celebrates local produce. If you time your visit right, you might be able to catch the twice-monthly farmers’ market, held on the university grounds, where you can sample delicious local food, crafts, and music.

When it comes to dining, you’ll be spoilt for choice. For a classic comfort meal, the Castle Green Inn is renowned for its Sunday carvery. And no visit to Lampeter is complete without a stop at Conti’s Cafe. Famous for their award-winning ice cream, a tradition since the 1940s, it’s the perfect treat after a day of exploring. If you’re looking for something a bit special, the Falcondale Hotel just outside of town offers a fine dining experience with a focus on locally sourced ingredients.

Beyond the Town: Nearby Natural Wonders

While Lampeter itself is captivating, it’s also a gateway to some incredible natural attractions. Just a short drive away, you can visit the Dolaucothi Gold Mines, the only known Roman gold mines in Britain. You can take a guided tour and even try your hand at gold panning. For nature lovers, the Denmark Farm Conservation Centre offers beautiful walks through wildlife-rich meadows and woodlands.

Lampeter offers a perfect day trip from Penrhos Park, providing a taste of authentic Welsh culture, history, and incredible food. So, next time you're staying with us, why not take the short journey and discover all the charm this wonderful market town has to offer?
