At Penrhos, we know that summer in Ceredigion is all about embracing the beautiful coastline and the traditions of Wales. And as August draws closer, there’s one event that truly captures the essence of our heritage: the Aberaeron Mackerel Festival, taking place on Saturday, August 23rd!
This isn’t just any food festival; it’s a wonderfully unique and light-hearted celebration dedicated to the humble mackerel and the bounty of the sea. Imagine a funeral, but with a joyful twist, all in honour of the fish that has sustained Aberaeron’s community for generations.

A Fin-tastic Tradition!
The Aberaeron Mackerel Festival, or ‘Mackerel Fiesta’ as it's often called, is a truly one-of-a-kind event. It marks the end of the summer fishing season and is the town’s way of giving thanks for the continued abundance of mackerel, which brings not only food and income but also the delightful return of dolphins to Cardigan Bay.
The heart of the festival is a mock funeral for a giant, super-sized papier-mâché mackerel effigy. This isn’t a sombre affair, however! The effigy is carried by bearers in a lively procession, often accompanied by a brass band, from the quayside through the charming streets of Aberaeron to the Aberaeron Yacht Club.
Adding to the unique atmosphere are the ‘mourning widows’. These masked, black-clad figures wail and follow the cortege, representing the fishermen’s wives who were often left behind while their partners went out to sea. It’s a humorous and poignant nod to the historical realities of a fishing town.
From Blessing to Beach Bonfire!
Upon arrival at the Aberaeron Yacht Club, the mackerel effigy receives a blessing from the local Vicar. This symbolic act is believed to ensure a bumper catch for the year ahead – a tradition deeply rooted in the hopes and livelihoods of a coastal community.
Following the blessing, the ‘wake’ begins! The Yacht Club bursts into life with a fantastic party featuring delicious barbecued food (mackerel, of course!), live music, and a well-stocked bar. It’s a chance for locals and visitors alike to come together, enjoy the atmosphere, and celebrate the season’s yield.
The grand finale of the day takes place at sunset, when the dearly-departed mackerel effigy is carried onto the beach and ceremonially burned. It’s a spectacular sight and a fitting end to a day of gratitude and revelry.
