The Art of the Deep Breath: Why January is Ceredigion’s Best-Kept Secret

There is a specific kind of silence that only happens in Mid-Wales in January.
The summer crowds have long since packed away. The frantic energy of Christmas has evaporated. What’s left is a version of Penrhos Park that most people never get to see: quiet, and incredibly restorative.
If you’re staying with us this week, you aren’t just on holiday - you’re on a reboot. Here is how to master the art of the ‘Deep January Breath’ during your stay.

The ‘Private’ 18-Hole Sanctuary
When the frost clings to the fairways and the mist sits low over the greens, the golf course looks like a painting.
The best part? You don’t need to rush. This week, there’s no pressure from the group behind you. It’s just you, your swing, and the occasional red kite circling overhead. Even if you aren’t a pro, heading to the driving range – complete with Trackman - as the sun sets over the coast is a meditative way to spend an hour.
The Sound of the Shore
A five-minute drive (or a bracing walk) takes you down to the beach at Llanrhystud. In July, you hear children and ice cream vans. In January, you hear the true voice of the sea.
The waves here don’t just crash; they tumble the pebbles with a rhythmic shhh that is better than any meditation app on your phone. Walk toward the lime kilns, breathe in the salt-heavy air, and let the wind blow away the mental cobwebs of last year.
The ‘Fire & Ice’ Routine
We are firm believers in the ‘Scandi-style’ afternoon.
The Ice
Take a long, chilly walk along the Coastal Path toward Aberaeron. Let your cheeks get rosy and your fingers get a bit nippy.
The Fire
Head straight back to our leisure facilities. There is no feeling quite like stepping into the sauna or the heated pool when you’ve still got the chill of the Atlantic on your skin. It’s a total reset for your nervous system.
Stargazing without the Wait
Because the sun sets early this time of the year, you don’t have to stay up until midnight to see the cosmos. Around 6PM, step outside your accommodation and look up.
Away from the orange glow of the big cities, the sky over Llanrhystud is startling. This week, keep an eye out for Orion the Hunter dominating the southern sky. It’s a free light show that puts any New Year’s fireworks to shame.
Local Tip: If you're heading into Aberystwyth for a bite to eat, stop at the top of Constitution Hill just before dinner. The view of the town lights reflecting in the dark bay is spectacular this time of year.
This Week’s Mantra: Do Less
January isn’t for ‘crushing goals’ or ‘new year, new you’ at Penrhos Park. It’s for sleeping in, reading that book you got for Christmas, and realising that the world looks pretty beautiful when it’s standing still.
How are you spending your quiet week?
