While our beautiful parkland offers of peace and relaxation, when you venture out of Penrhos Park, you’ll discover the magic that lies just beyond our gates.
Here are some of our favourite day trips, showing you the very best of Ceredigion and beyond.

The Colourful Harbour Towns of Aberaeron & New Quay
Just a stone’s throw from Penrhos Park, you’ll find the charming, multi-coloured harbour towns of Aberaeron and New Quay. Aberaeron, with its distinctive Regency architecture, is a delightful place to stroll along the promenade and try your hand at crabbing on the harbour wall. A little further south, New Quay is famous for its resident bottlenose dolphins. You can often spot them from the harbour wall, but for an even more exciting experience, book a boat trip for a closer encounter! Both towns offer a wonderful selection of cafes, pubs, and seafood restaurants for a delicious lunch.
The Expansive Sands of Borth Beach
Head north from Penrhos Park and you’ll soon arrive at Borth, home to almost three miles of golden sand at low tide. This vast beach is perfect for families, with plenty of room for games, sandcastles, and long walks. A true natural wonder, Borth is also known for its ancient submerged forest, which can be seen at very low tides. It’s a fascinating sight that offers a glimpse into Wales’s prehistoric past.
The Legendary Vale of Rheidol Railway & Devil's Bridge
Step back in time with a ride on the Vale of Rheidol steam train. This iconic narrow-gauge railway takes you on a 12-mile journey from Aberystwyth through the heart of the Cambrian Mountains to the mystical Devil’s Bridge. At the end of the line, you can explore the famous Devil’s Bridge Falls, a spectacular natural attraction that has inspired poets for centuries. The scenic trail takes you down into the gorge to view the three bridges built one on top of the other, each one older than the last. Don’t forget to stop at Sarah Bunton’s Chocolates for a well-deserved treat!
Red Kites at Bwlch Nant yr Arian
A truly unforgettable experience awaits at Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre. Just a short drive inland from Aberystwyth, this is one of the best places in the UK to see red kites. Every day, these magnificent birds of prey gather for their daily feeding time, swooping down from the sky in a breathtaking display. You can watch from the visitor centre’s terrace, which overlooks a beautiful lake. The centre also offers a range of walking and mountain biking trails for all abilities.
The Historic University Town of Aberystwyth
A bustling seaside town with a rich history, Aberystwyth has something for everyone. Take a ride on the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway, the longest in Britain, to the top of Constitution Hill for panoramic views across Cardigan Bay. Explore the ruins of Aberystwyth Castle, an imposing fortress with a turbulent past. You can also wander along the Victorian promenade, browse the independent shops, and visit the impressive National Library of Wales, one of the world’s great libraries.
Whether you prefer a relaxing day on the coast or an action-packed journey into the Welsh countryside, there’s a perfect day trip waiting for you just minutes from Penrhos Park.
